Chapter 28

When an animal is being chased by an enemy it cannot fight, it does one of two things.

It runs, or it hides.

So far I had selected the first option, and I had done all right by it.

I was tired now, right down to my bones, but that wouldn't have stopped me if I had a clear run into daylight.

That was the one thing I took away from the war that made me better, stronger. It was always,

and would always be a measure for what truly tired was, or truly hopeless, or truly ready to

lie down and quit. And if I hadn't quit then, I wouldn't quit now.

It made me something more than I was before, and millions of other regular guys like me had

learned the same lesson.

It made me wonder what we couldn't do, all of us unstoppable worker bees, if we ever got

together and set our minds to it.

I didn't really know what made me think of that at this precise moment.

Because on this day, Run had not been an option that was available to me.

Once you got past Jefferson Road, it was all too open.

Long, flat stretches with no cover, empty lots making for chasms between buildings that felt vast,

no alleys, no shortcuts,

no way out.

It was time to hide.

To rab it into a corner somewhere and hope the wolf rolled right over me.

At least that had been the hope.

I had run into an industrial building.
