We stuck to residential streets and kept moving.

Nobody expected to find a fugitive taking the air with a lady on a pleasant summer evening.

I had most of my hair tucked up in a plain-looking cap in the theory that if fewer

people noticed me, then almost no one would look at Jack, though possibly the opposite was true.

"'Don't walk like we're going anywhere,' Jack said.

"'If we look like a couple, we're invisible.'

I nodded.

"'I'd like to make one thing clear,' I said.

"'If you try and put your arm around me, I will scream for the nearest cop.'

"'Let's not get crazy,' he said.

"'It isn't like the entire force isn't

gunning for me. Maybe not the entire force, I said. Lieutenant Sabian knows you didn't do it.

Jack's eyebrow raised in powerful disapproval. You've been talking to Sabian? He's been talking to me,

I said. You couldn't imagine that was going to happen.'

He nodded.

"'Yeah, sorry about that,' he said, with what seemed to be a degree of sincerity.

"'Where have you been staying?' I asked.

"'You don't want to know that,' he answered sagely.

"'You mean you don't want me to know that,' I said,
