The life of a private detective is, I suppose,

a little more unpredictable than most.

Your daily routine is something less than routine.

It is often dull, but never monotonous.

And unlike your modern office worker who looks on in secret envy at what he imagines is a thrill-a-minute occupation,

a detective does not know what he will be doing in a month, in a year, or in 20 years,

when some fool presents him with a gold watch and shows him the door.

And don't get me wrong, all of this I find good.

But it is, as all good things are, at least partly an illusion.

The truth of the matter is that there are really only so many reasons

that a person knocks on the gray-green door that bears the letters Justice and Dixon private investigations.

Someone has lost something, or someone has lost someone.

Person A has reason to believe that person B is stepping out behind their backs,

while person C is being blackmailed for the same activity.

Life's rich pageant, and there was no sense in pretending that it didn't get to be a little predictable

after a certain amount of time it passed.

But that, too, was part of the charm of the position.
