Do you think that we do face threats today in America to religious liberty?

I know we do.

I think the greatest threat is coming from an aggressive secularism.

So secularism is a kind of ideological position that would say,

a materialist view, a purely secularist view is all there is

religion should be marginalized from public life. Maybe accept it as a private preoccupation like a hobby,

but we want religion out of education, we want it out of healthcare, we want it out of the public realm.

And I think for sure that kind of aggressive secularism is on the march.

When I was a bishop out in California, I was auxiliary bishop of L.A.

And we watched it there, you know, where the health care institutions, educational institutions,

more and more the state wanted to, you wanted to extricate religion from that.

And it's happening too, not just institutionally but just ideologically.

It's getting to people's minds.

That religion is old superstition, it's anti-scientific, and so let's try to marginalize it.

I think we have to stand to thwart that kind of aggressive secularism.

That's where I see in our country the greatest threat to religious liberty.

You talk about health, we see that people that are fighting disease, for example, if they're

also fighting loneliness, the mortality rate is as high as 40% higher for those that are fighting

this alone, or they at least feel alone, real or perceived.

Their experience is loneliness.
