Hi, from CNN. This is Madeline Thompson with five things you need to know for Thursday, January 23rd.

A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order to block President Donald Trump's

executive order ending birthright citizenship. The Seattle judge called it, quote,

blatantly unconstitutional. CNN's Joan Biscupic has the latest. So first of Donald Trump's many missives that he took on Monday and that he took on Tuesday,

this is the first one that's been blocked, but it's also the one that is frankly predictable

because this order that would negate more than a century, a century of protection for anyone born in the U.S. to become a citizen,

it really does fly in the face of precedent.

Washington and the other states that requested the order be halted are arguing that,

in addition to the impact on their residents, ending birthright citizenship will burden

their state programs financially and logistically, as those children are shut off from federal

benefits they would be entitled to as citizens.

In a virtual address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Donald

Trump reiterated his efforts to backtrack on clean energy

and end federal support for electric vehicles.
