| 0:00.0 | This is bird note. |
| 0:04.0 | You might be surprised to learn that many birds have a sense of smell, |
| 0:09.0 | and the odors that birds make can act as mating signals for some species. |
| 0:14.0 | The source for many of these scents, says biologist Daniel Whitaker, |
| 0:18.0 | are the microbes that live in birds' pre-noil, |
| 0:21.0 | which they use to keep their feathers in good condition. |
| 0:24.0 | It turns out that the arpeggio gland, which is the gland that secretes pre-noil, |
| 0:28.0 | is home to a really diverse community of bacteria, |
| 0:31.0 | and a lot of those bacteria are odor-producing. |
| 0:34.0 | So, when birds rub pre-noil into their feathers, |
| 0:38.0 | they're also spreading fragrant beneficial bacteria. |
| 0:41.0 | For birds such as dark-eyed juncos, the pungent odors can help attract potential mates. |
| 0:49.0 | Daniel and other scientists are studying how the genes that regulate birds' immune systems |
| 0:54.0 | might help control these microbes. |
| 0:56.0 | So, there's some really interesting work going on about immune system genes, |
| 1:00.0 | like the major histocompatibility complex, |
| 1:02.0 | which is involved in regulating parasites and bacteria that come into the body. |
| 1:06.0 | It's thought that that gene complex will affect the bacteria you carry, |
| 1:11.0 | which will affect your scent. |
| 1:13.0 | So, I feel like this has the potential to be this unifying set of information |
| 1:18.0 | to help us understand how we get from animals' immune system |
| 1:22.0 | to the bacteria they carry to the scent to how they attract other individuals. |
