Summary

Patrick Daugherty (@RotoPat) and Denny Carter break down the latest wild swings in this year’s insane coaching market, beginning with Sean McDermott becoming the 10th head man to lose his job. Was this a necessary firing by the Bills, and how much of the blame rests with GM Brandon Beane? They also talk about who they would like to see pick up the torch in Buffalo. Next they assess Kevin Stefanski’s fit in Atlanta, Jeff Hafley’s in Miami, and Robert Saleh’s in Tennessee. In the year of the retread, who is the best recycled head coach? They also look into OC Drew Petzing’s hire in Detroit, Eric Bieniemy’s reported Kansas City return, and Mike McCarthy’s Steelers interview.

Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Rotor Roll Football Show, Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, somehow already three weeks into the new year.

0:23.8

I'm Patrick Dardy, joined as always by Denny Carter.

0:26.8

Big football games last weekend.

0:28.6

Big football games this weekend.

0:30.4

Not really what we're going to be talking about today, though.

0:32.3

It's because the most active coaching cycle in recent memory is humming along without cease.

0:39.0

Denny, hopefully that makes sense. Ten openings. I believe four of them have now been filled. Of course, it was only nine

0:43.4

openings the last time we joined you. Buffalo has made Sean McDermott the 10th. We're getting here

0:48.7

33% of the entire NFL head coaching workforce relieved of its duties. We'll lead with McDermott or talk about that this had to happen.

0:57.7

Who do we like to see there?

0:59.0

What do we think of Brandon Bean, who a lot of the fans seem to be blaming instead of Sean McDermott.

1:03.5

So we'll start with the bills.

1:04.9

Then we'll get to the hirings in Atlanta, Baltimore, not Baltimore, Atlanta, Tennessee, another team. The Dolphins. Yeah, the Dolphins. There you go. So we'll talk about the new hirings. There comes to the new offensive coordinator hirings. Drew Petzing in Detroit. I've seen a lot of fantasy managers like losing it over this. Yeah. We'll talk about whether or not that's actually an appropriate reaction or not. If all you care about is fantasy points, it could be the best thing that's ever happened to you. I believe it. Kansas City, so Kansas City was working really hard and replacing Matt Nagy because they thought he was leaving for head coaching job. I think Matt Nagy thought he was leaving for the Titans head coaching job. It's been filled by Robert Sala. His old job has reportedly been filled by Eric Bienemy. What's old is new again in Kansas City. The enemy was never anyone's idea of a great elite offensive coordinator. I'm a lot better than Matt and Aggie. I think so. Pretty concerning that Andy Reed just keeps recycling guys. So going outside his own coaching tree. We'll talk about how that's probably an upgrade. I'll take a few more looks at the cycle if we have time. Who's our favorite first-time candidate? A lot of retreads so far. And Mike McCarthy talking to Steelers, things of that nature, Denny. But I want to start talking about a different coach. Someone who would be my top candidate in the cycle,

2:18.8

if he had any interest in coming in the NFL,

2:20.9

of course, Indiana's Kurt Signetti.

2:23.0

The Hoosiers, first off, tired of Indiana dominating college football.

2:27.8

It's exhaust.

2:28.1

Our whole lives, like Indiana football, please, like, take a chill pill.

2:33.0

I just hope my children can know a day where

2:35.6

Indiana is not winning national title after national title. So, extremely surreal. One of the

2:41.7

most surreal sports occurrences in my entire life, the Indiana Hoosiers winning the national

2:46.8

title. The players, of course, are the ones most responsible for this, but, well, not me, Kurt Signetti is why this happened, Denny. And, you know, people watch sports and they fall into this trap all the time, like, man, like this Nick Sabin guy, like, I feel like he should be president. You know, like, it's like, well, I really, really like this Nick Saban, and I think he could be successful in anything. It's a classic trap when you watch these guys. But I watch Kurt Signetti. I listen to Kurt Signetti, didn't he? I'm like, wow, I wish this guy were my senator. Or I wish this guy were the president of my local bank. Really? Yeah, I really feel like he's like an entirely different breed.
