President Trump has released the first federal budget proposal of his second term, and as you

might expect, it includes billions of dollars in cuts. Trump wants to slash domestic spending

by almost a quarter to the lowest

level of the modern era. To be clear, actually passing a budget is up to Congress, and presidential

requests almost never survive the process intact. But since Republicans do have the majority in both

chambers, it's possible many of Trump's cuts make it through. So what's included exactly?

Well, the president wants to get rid of many climate, education, health, and housing programs.

He wants to cut the National Institutes of Health and CDC budgets in half. He also proposed

cutting funding for some federal law enforcement, including the FBI. But in one of the few

spending increases, Trump asked lawmakers to boost

Homeland Security spending by more than $43 billion to help with his immigration crackdown.

He also requested a 13% increase for the military. In response, Democrats and some Republicans

in Congress called the plan heartless and said it would hurt lower-income Americans the most,

while Trump still raises the deficit with tax cuts for wealthy Americans.

But others like Speaker Mike Johnson are endorsing this blueprint, saying it makes sure all American tax dollars are used to serve the American people, not a bloated bureaucracy.

A fuller budget plan is expected to come out soon. Of course, President Trump doesn't need Congress for all cuts, since many of them he's trying to get done through executive
