Welcome. I'm Bill Moyers, and my guest is Eddie Glawd, Jr., author of Democracy in Black,

how race still enslaves the American soul. In the first part of our conversation, Professor Glawed and I

discuss the crisis that continues to engulf

black America.

You know, we talk about the achievement gap, we talk about the empathy gap, we talk about the wealth

gap.

And the value gap is this, that is the belief that white people matter more than others.

And to the extent to which that belief animates our social arrangements, our political

practices, our economic realities,

under different material conditions, as long as that belief obtains, democracy will always be

an abeyance in this country.

We continue with Professor Glaude's proposal to upend our politics and launch a revolution

of values.

The argument you make in your book, Democracy and Black, is that if white working people,

poor white folks could see themselves in the same fix as poor black working people,

if they could each see that they're in the same boat of neoliberalism,

we get the politics that you advocate.

This is what we can't seem to see because one of the insidious dimensions of our current

politics, right, is to attack that very possibility, right?

It's to exploit the differences between us, to exploit the fears, to cultivate them, to stoke

them in order to benefit the status quo,

to maintain the status quo.
