I'm McGarris and this is post-mortem. I often get asked what the job of the director is.

There's the obvious answer to be the one person who has the big picture in mind,

to know how everything interconnects to have a unified vision to share with all the artists, actors, and technicians.

To know what the movie is from all angles and to be able to

to articulate it and answer the hundreds of questions that need answers from every direction. But there's an even simpler answer.

To find, encourage, and allow the best people to do their best work.

A director can't do it all but he or she

can recruit the best talent available to him or her to inspire them to make them feel

they're doing something special. I've been lucky to work with some pretty amazing actors and

artists. They are the heroes, the ones who actually do the heavy lifting,

actors laying themselves physically bare before the cameras, the cinematographers who weave images with

light and shadow, the production designers, the composers, the prop builders, the VFX artist.

But so very often the superstars of the horror genre are the makeup effects artists.

They make the monsters that inspire our nightmares create creatures that become.

As great as the computer-generated effects have become, there's something so liberating for an actor

and a crew to have the actual creatures or their mayhem on the set right there for real reflecting light from its

slime covered latex interacting with the characters instilling fear in and out of the shadows.

I've been particularly fortunate in working with some of the
