Have I ever gone to jail? Yeah, I just got out, actually.

If he doesn't show up to court, we've got to pay the $50,000.

No green exchange, no kiss the bride.

There's no glamour in a jailhouse wedding.

From the Independent Producer Project and KCRW.com, I'm Bob Carlson and this is unfictional. Today on the program, a story about faith and the struggle to live a godly life in a harsh, harsh world.

The setting is South Los Angeles, a neighborhood called Jefferson Park, where a congregation of

African American Muslims made a big decision about their mosque that divided the

community. And for one particular member of the congregation that decision was so profane

he went into a self-imposed exile. To him the decision went in direct opposition to

the will of God, but it was also personal.

And a quick warning to listeners with young children, the story is also about drug use and the murder of a young woman.

In 2007, jihad Saffir became the imam of Masjid I Badala, a small storefront mosque located in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of

Los Angeles.

Jihad took over for his father, Siddek, who founded the mosque in 1986.

And when he took over, jihad continued the traditions his father had started,

and generally things inside the mosque did not change dramatically.

The same cannot be said for what was happening in the neighborhood outside the mosque.

That area I can see it transforming you can see it before our eyes transforming.
