Summary

How does hearing someone else's story change the way you think about the world? Today I am joined by author and climate change activist Devi Lockwood to talk about the story-fueled cycling journey that brought her to 20 countries, spanning 6 continents, and eventually lead her to write her first book, 1001 Voices on Climate Change. If you love story-telling or have ever wondered what it'd be like to do a 5-year bike tour, then you do not want to miss this episode. Devi shares the roots of her inspiration, how she turned her vision into a reality, insights she gained along the way, and so much more. Do you have a passion project that has influenced your travels? I'd love to hear more about it and hope you will share by sending me an audio message. For me, I don't know, it was kind of this surrender to the zigzag flow of having a general direction, but not knowing exactly where it was going to lead me.

Today, I have a wonderful conversation to share with you.

I got to chat with Devi Lockwood, who spent five years traveling in 20 countries on six continents to document 1001 stories on water and climate change. How did this

0:23.4

whole project start? How did she get it funded? Why did she do it? You'll hear all that and

0:28.6

much more. What I find fascinating is how she's been able to bring climate change and water

0:36.0

issues around the globe to life through

0:38.7

these stories. And we talk about that in this interview because a lot of times we read

0:44.3

newspaper articles, we get the statistics and the numbers, but they don't really have the human

0:50.1

element. And that was a big initiative for Devi was to get those human stories to find out how

0:56.9

this is really impacting the world. And of course, she has plenty of travel adventures to share

1:01.4

along the way. She talks about how she started with bike touring. Is that something you can do?

1:06.5

Is that something anybody can do? She'll share her advice around that. She shares her best advice for how we as

1:12.2

individuals can make a difference when it comes to climate change. She talks about how she

1:17.1

parlayed this project into a career in journalism, why she considers solo travel to be the most

1:25.6

social form of traveling and just a ton more.

1:30.2

Devi's awesome.

1:30.8

She's written about science, climate change, and technology for the New York Times,

1:34.0

The Guardian, Slate, and the Washington Post, among many others.

1:37.9

A lot of takeaways in this chat.

1:39.5

I know you're going to love it.

1:40.6

Plus, I want to give a shout out to somebody in this community, a listener from Germany who is making the plunge into travel. All that and more happening today, right now.

So buckle up, strap in, thanks for being here, and welcome to the Zero to Travel Podcast, my friend.
