And today I'm joined by Jason Brill, also a trauma surgery fellow at the University of Texas in Houston, and a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps.

Today, we are going to be discussing transfusion medicine from a trauma surgery perspective.

All right, we are.

So, patients who are bleeding need blood, not crystalloid, not colloids.

So how do we go about transfusing a trauma patient and what are the potential pitfalls?

Good questions and things that we run into every day.

So let's just start with a generic case.

A middle-aged man is involved in a high-speed motor vehicle collision.

On presentation, he's hypotensive with no outward

sides of bleeding. How are you going to manage him, Patrick? Right, so every single

trauma patient needs to be approached in the same way and that's with a complete

and efficient primary survey.
