Welcome to the Andy Staples show. We've got a very special guest for you today.

0:14.4

Baylor head coach Dave Miranda joins us. And I got to say this is one of the more interesting

0:18.6

conversations I have had with a head football coach at the college level.

0:22.5

He is just a different dude, which he'll be the first to tell you.

0:25.7

He basically puts it as he thinks he's weird.

0:29.5

I am not entirely sure if he is as weird as he thinks he is, but I imagine if you spent your entire life around other college football coaches,

0:38.7

then you probably do feel a little bit different if you are like Dave Miranda, who is very introverted, very much

0:45.7

kind of up in his own head at times. And he'll tell you this. These are not bad things because

0:50.6

what's really interesting about Dave Randa is he's found a way to craft a coaching

0:55.9

style around his personality that really fits his personality. And you saw it really take off

And I really do think in the age of the transfer portal, coaches like Dave Arand are going to be the ones that other coaches come to.

1:30.4

Just like you would go to a guy to say, well, how do you defend this offense?

1:34.5

You can go to a guy and say, how do you build this culture?

1:36.8

How do you handle players in this situation?

1:40.4

Dave Randa probably has some pretty good advice for that because he's coming at it from a little bit different perspective.

1:45.8

And you can say, oh, well, this is just soft and you're coddling this younger generation.

1:51.5

Not necessarily.

1:52.5

I just think you have to communicate with this generation differently.

1:56.8

And if you watch Baylor play, or if you watched LSU's defense or Wisconsin's defense or Utah State's defense when Dave Randa was coaching them, soft is not the word you would ever choose to use.

2:07.8

So he gets the desired result.

2:10.3

He produces these tough teams that play well together, but he does it in a very different way.
