Mexico's talk of rude causes might seem politically inexpedient, but the truth is that

both countries are dependent on each other,

and so much so that they cannot afford not to listen to one another and closely consider the

other side's demands.

Stephanie Ataladred, a contributing writer at The New Yorker, spent the past several months

talking with senior officials in Mexico and the United States

about the chaos at the border and the precarious relationship between the two countries.

Then, last week, President Biden issued an executive order closing the border to asylum seekers.

Frankly, I would have preferred to address this issue through a bipartisan legislation

because that's the only way to actually get the kind of system we have now that's broken,

fixed, to hire more border patrol agents, more asylum officers, more judges.

But Republicans have left me no choice.

Today I'm announcing actions to bar migrants who cross our southern border unlawfully

from receiving asylum. Staff writer Jonathan Blitzer, who wrote about the executive order for
