small but stable leads in critical states that edged him closer on Wednesday to winning the presidency.

President Trump and Republicans threatened legal challenges

as they sought to shift the battle for the White House from the polling place to the courthouse.

But as Trump's antics and rhetoric grew more aggressive over the course of the day,

Biden's electoral position only strengthened, and states including Michigan and Wisconsin fell into his column.

The former Vice President has secured 253 electoral votes with multiple pathways to the required 270.

Biden delivered brief remarks on Wednesday

in Wilmington, Delaware, sounding an upbeat tone and offering a conciliatory

message to a nation whose divisions and strife were laid bare by the results.

Trump, who remained in private throughout the day, tweeted his displeasure at the results,

and reportedly told his aides to, quote, go down fighting.

The source of Biden's confidence in Trump's angst

Lait counted mail-in ballots in urban centers such as Milwaukee in Detroit

that swung Wisconsin and Michigan his way.
