Compassion has become an overused word in the modern world and has come to mean nothing more than sympathetic tolerance. In Biblical Compassion, a five-part teaching series from the book of Jonah, Michael Youssef explains the difference between the biblical compassion of the God of Scripture and humanistic compassion.

You know, the problem with the overuse of the word compassion is that it has the danger of becoming muddled and muddied and marred.

And then really ends up being nothing more than sentimentality.

And you don't have to be a genius to recognize that sentimentality is killing the truth.

Sentimentality is blurring the acceptance of evil.

Sentimentality is covering up sin with the dress of tolerance.

Sentimentality is redefining sin and wickedness.

Sentimentality is indeed deciding what is right and what is wrong.

As a person who trained in the field of sociology, it will not be long for a culture that adopts sentimentality.

It will not be long before God and His Word will be replaced by what society decides is right and wrong.

It would not be long for God's absolutes to take a back seat to man's definitions.

It would not be long before God's commandments and God's injunctions will give way to humanistic arbitration.

And that is why I want to explain this day in the coming day is the difference between compassion,

biblical compassion, and distinguish it from political and humanistic compassion.

Biblical compassion is rooted in the God of the Bible, not in secular humanism, not in eastern mysticism, and not in multiplicity of religion.

Biblical compassion has its origin in the compassionate God of Abraham and Jacob and Esau, the God of the Father of the Lord

Jesus Christ. Biblical compassion is far removed from humanistic sentimentality and we the people of God must understand the difference.

We the people of God must comprehend the distinction between the two else will be swept off our feet into that kind of sentimentality.
