and how it relates to modern science.

Before the scientific discoveries of the late 19th century,

most adherents of Catholicism and Protestantism

believed that the Earth and the universe were 6,000 years old,

based on chronology derived from the Bible.

However, after the discovery of the radioactive behavior of atoms,

developments in the study of geology,

and accurate measurements of star distances,

Catholic scholars abandoned the idea that the Earth was 6,000 years old.

Fundamentalist Protestants, however, clung to this idea that this was a teaching of the Bible,

and seek to support their theses by scientific evidence, by which they try to explain away these discoveries.

Let's look at these in more detail

and see whether it's acceptable, not acceptable,

or perfectly neutral for a Catholic to believe these.
