Summary

Most of us believe God has more for us, but are we actually living it? In this message, Better Than Dreaming, Pastor Charles Metcalf unpacks the tension between the life we hope for and the life we’re actually experiencing. In John 10:10, Jesus makes it clear: the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy but He came so we could have a full, abundant life. The question is… do you have it? This message challenges us to move beyond just accepting grace and start acting on it. The life you’ve been praying for is often found in the action you’ve been avoiding. If you’re ready to stop just hearing the Word and start living it, this message will show you how acting on grace works in you, on you, and through you, so you can experience a life that’s truly better than dreaming.

So we're going to jump into the message today.

0:18.2

If you got your Bibles, open up your Bibles to the book of John,

0:21.8

the book of John chapter number 10, the book of John, a little bit about John. He's one of Jesus'

0:29.0

disciples. And he's a little prideful. You won't catch this unless it's in the nuance of how

0:35.6

he writes. But in one of his stories, he's talking

0:38.2

about him and a friend were running to get somewhere, and he talked about himself in the third

0:43.4

person. He's like, but then the other disciple beat Peter to the tomb. But he's talking about

0:50.2

himself. He's just random fact he'd be doing that. He calls himself the one Jesus love. So he'd be in the joint, he'd be like, yeah, you know, James was there, Peter was there, the one Jesus love was there. And it's like, bro, you can't do that right in your own letter. That's crazy. John's the best. But John chapter number 10, verse 10 is going to kind of be our starting point today. If you got it, say I got it. If you don't, don't worry, we got you. All right, could you throw that up on the screen for me? John 1010 says this funny story. Actually, I grew up in a church. My dad was a pastor. It was called Abundant Life Church. Abundant Life Christian Church. I don't know. It had some more spiritual words in there. But this was the anchor verse. So John 1010 in the NIV, this is what it says.

1:32.3

Can you throw it up there for me? It says this, the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

1:42.2

But I have come that they may have life and destroy. But I have come that they may have life

1:48.2

and have it to the full.

1:51.4

This is what Jesus is saying.

1:52.7

He says, there's a thief, and he's here

1:55.0

to steal stuff, to kill and destroy.

1:57.5

But the reason I showed up, the reason I'm here,

2:00.4

the reason I stepped out of the reason I'm here, the reason I stepped out of heaven

2:02.6

and into human history. He explains in these words, I came that they may have life and have

2:09.1

it to the full. Look at the message. Eugene Peterson, I was a professor. He kind of paraphrased it

2:14.2

this way. It says, a thief is only there to still kill and destroy.

2:22.3

I have come so that they can have real and eternal life.
