At his confirmation hearings this week, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch began his opening address with some biographical details.

My grandmother grew up on a Nebraska farm where an icebox wasn't something you plugged into the wall, but something you lowered into the ground.

With seven children, she never stopped moving, and she never stopped loving.

As the New York Times put it, Gorsuch, quote, cast himself as a humble westerner, reared on fly fishing.

And yet for all the care put into his biography, Judge Gorsuch also seems to say,

never mind, he rules on the law, not on people.

My decisions have never reflected a judgment about the people before me. Only a judgment about

the law and the facts at issue in each particular case. It's a needle that's been tricky

for judicial nominees to thread. They want to

seem human, but not too human. In a show we called Bench Press, which aired last year, Brooke examined

what it means to really know a justice. For all the drama associated with the court,

flowing robes, lifetime appointments,

nation-changing rulings,

cinematic depictions of the justices are rare.

Here's a sampling.

First Monday in October,

released in 1981 around the time of Sandra Day O'Connor's appointment,

parodied the notion of a lady justice.

It's not because she's a woman.
