Summary

Today on the show we’re talking with professional racecar driver, Josef Newgarden. Josef has won the Indie series twice, he has been racing since he was a kid, and he didn’t finish high school or college!

We talk about how nothing can hold you back, including being an introvert. Josef had to step out of his comfort zone, and interact with the team in order to create chemistry, to work together better on race day! Josef also lost his first sponsor he ever had, he thought that was the end of his season, but another company stepped in and believed in what Josef could do. He went on to win the championship that year.

Having passion for what you do, becoming obsessed with beating the competition, not letting failures become deterrents, but using them to fuel your passion; that is what Josef brings to the table in today’s interview, and everyday he races.

Pushing yourself, believing in yourself, and stepping out of your comfort zone will get you to new heights you didn’t think were possible.

How are you doing, brother?

0:18.4

Dude, I'm excited.

0:19.1

I hope we didn't use everything up.

0:20.6

We drove here together and had a great 45-minute conversation with the boys. And we've got to rehash that. It was good. That was so organic. I felt like what we had going on. It was natural, right? It was. Yeah, we've covered a lot of ground. So we've got to like redo it now. Yes. Well, I want the listeners and viewers to know that, look, you know, you getting ready to be 30, you've already won the indie series twice.

0:23.9

Yep.

0:24.2

Right? You didn't finish traditional high school, dropped out. You didn't go to college. You finished school in England. You won a race that no other American has ever won in England. I want to talk a little bit about your history and story to give them the background.

0:55.2

Yeah. Then I want to get into you and me and let's collaborate again. Fair enough. So you grew up

1:02.6

in Nashville, Tennessee? Yeah, I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, just north in a suburb called Hendersonville.

1:08.1

Okay. Pretty normal suburban life came from a really great family.

1:12.1

My father was in the picture making business with my grandfather.

1:17.0

Loved racing growing up, but I played baseball and basketball, so kind of, you know, normal

1:21.3

stick and ball sports.

1:22.6

But always saw racing on TV, always wanted to be involved in that.

1:25.8

But yeah, Nashville, Tennessee is where I grew up.

1:27.3

And then, you know, the story kind of takes off when I was 13. I was always begging to get into racing in some way. And my parents just were super risk adverse. Getting a bicycle for me was actually hard when I was a kid. I had great loving parents, but they just did not want me to get injured. How did you convince them at 13? Because I know you said before, like you were begging to get into racing. How did you convince them? I mean, the salesman already at 13. I was relentless in my pursuit for it. Anything that I could get into that had motion or, you know, could go fast or had anything about that. I wanted to be involved. Anything that I could tinker with. I loved engines. I love the, I love the engineering behind race cars, Legos. I was huge into Legos, Connects, anything that had engineering behind it or how to build it or how to make it go quick. I was so drawn to that as a kid. So I think it was just my desire to really be a part of it. And finally my dad, because my dad's huge in the racing. I grew up with it on TV. so it's not like he didn't like it. I just don't think he wanted me to be in that from a risk standpoint.

2:21.6

He wanted me to be a center fielder for the New York Yankees. That was his vision. He's like, all dads want that. He's like, we're going to play baseball. You're going to be amazing at it. And I loved baseball, but I wasn't passionate about it.

2:15.8

Yeah.

2:16.0

I could tell I was passionate about racing.
