Hey everyone. Welcome back to the show. Today we're mixing it up a little bit. We're going to talk about aquaponics. I haven't talked about this too much on the podcast because it's probably the growing method I have the least experience with. However, it is becoming more and more popular.

0:14.8

It's certainly huge in places like Australia, which have quite a drought type of condition most of the time, and Aquaponics solves a lot of the

0:24.6

problems with water use because it grows plants and fish in a symbiotic

0:29.6

relationship and you know can just make absolutely wonderful use of the inputs that you put into the

0:35.0

garden. So we're going to talk about fish that can work well and plants that can work well in an aquaponic

0:42.4

system. So fish-wise, the most popular fish you're ever

0:46.9

going to see for aquaponics is going to be tilapia. It's a lopoeia, it's one of the most popular farmed fish in the world as well and that's

0:56.4

probably because it's so tolerant of many different types of water conditions. It can grow in relatively poor water I would say and

also has a really high ratio of conversion of the food that it eats into protein, its own weight in protein.

1:15.4

So Tylapia is going to be a fantastic fish for Aquaponics,

1:19.8

although I'm going to run through a few.

1:21.4

You can use Koy or a fancy goldfish. You can use

1:24.7

ornamental fish like guppies or tetras which are those fighting fish that you

1:30.0

would see it like a pet store. Other ones you can use are crappy, sunfish, bluegill, brim,

1:37.0

etc. Now there are some other ones that you would use. Some people will use Bar mundi that's really popular down in Australia

1:45.7

it's actually a really delicious fish to eat as fish and chips as well just in

1:49.8

case you are down there and you're looking for a snack but let's go ahead and talk about what you

1:54.4

guys are probably more interested in, which would be the plants.

1:59.1

So first and foremost, any plant that's going to do well in a hydroponic system is

2:04.4

probably going to do well in an aquaponic system as well and that's because

2:09.8

although the mechanism of getting nutrients into the water is different between

2:13.9

hydroponics and aquaponics, the way that the plant itself grows is very
