We have Karen Jessa back on the show, the owner of Midsummer Farm, which of course is a part-time half-acre peony farm in Virginia.

So we've talked Karen about the setup and why you might want to do this.

Maybe you're convinced at this point and you need to know, okay, well, I actually need to know about peonies.

So are there different types much like a tomato where you've got your determinants

your indeterminates obviously there's cult of ours as well which we'll get into but

as far as like the archetypes of types of peonies what is the breakdown there?

Yeah there are three main types of peonies, what is the breakdown there?

Yeah, there are three main types.

Urbaceous is what most people are familiar with.

That's typically the ones that you're going to see in your grandmother's garden kind of deal.

But then there's also tree peony which actually have like a woody bark on them and

they get quite a bit taller and the flowers are quite a bit bigger, really beautiful, but the vase life is not good at all on tree peony.

And then there's an intersectional peony, which is a cross between tree and herbaceous.

Those some of them do well as cut flowers but for the most part

we're looking at the herbaceous column.

So you're not growing much tree peony, for example, at the farm.

Well, I did until I realized they weren't really appropriate.
