Summary

This week, we’re revisiting an episode with one of our favorite guests from 2021: New Orleans-based artist Ashley Longshore. Ashley recently created the album artwork for Rhett’s forthcoming solo record, The Misfit (used here in the episode graphic). The album drops on September 16, which makes it a perfect time to revisit Ashley's brilliant creative spirit. Pre-order Rhett's new album, The Misfit, here. “You could decide to start a creative journey or find yourself when you're sixty years old. I think that really happens when you decide you're going to be your own best friend and your own biggest cheerleader.” - Ashley Longshore Pop artist Ashley Longshore joins Rhett in this episode to talk about growing up in Alabama, discovering her path and how she approaches the business side of being an artist. Ashley and Rhett talk about the things that inspire their work, and how to handle the fear and anxiety that comes with living a creative life. Ashley Longshore is a New Orleans-based, self taught artist. She has built an empire in the art world and challenges the traditional business model of art galleries. Back in February of 2021, Ashley Longshore agreed to submit to the wheels off treatment, which is to say she agreed to let me interview her about her creative process.

0:18.3

And I was blown away. I thought she was such a long shot in terms of a get. I didn't know her.

0:24.4

I had friends that had spent time around her and said that she was not just approachable, but

0:32.0

really nice and cool. And one of us, as we like to say, in the circles in which I run, and specifically

0:40.3

the old 97s. If somebody's cool, you say, oh, they're one of us. Ashley Longshore was purported

0:46.0

to be one of us, and she agreed to do wheels off, but I dropped the ball that day back in

0:52.3

February, I think of 2021. I was on top of a mountain climbing through the

0:57.9

snow. Oh my God, I blew it. But guess what? She was so cool about it. She totally understood.

1:04.9

And she agreed to reschedule. And we did finally get the interview together. And Ashley Longshore was such a great guest,

1:12.6

is such a great wheels off. That's why we've decided that in honor of the imminent release of my

1:19.3

album, The Misfit, we would rerun this interview with Ashley Longshore. The reason she's connected

1:26.8

to The Misfit is because in October of 2021, when this record

1:31.2

was finally finished, I thought it was really special and I thought it was in itself very much

1:37.0

a work of art, this weird, bright, glittering thing and it deserved a special cover.

1:45.5

So I reached out to Ashley and I asked if she might be willing to make an album cover, a painting, to be an album cover.

1:52.1

And she had not done that before.

1:54.7

And she was up for it, willing to work with the limited budget of an indie rock record label.

1:59.8

And she made such a special painting.

2:03.2

I feel very grateful for getting to know Ashley and for getting to have the cover of my new

2:10.8

album be a painting created specifically for the album by Ashley Longshore. So please enjoy this revisiting of an old Wheels Off featuring the great Ashley Longshore.

2:26.4

Welcome to Wheels Off, a show about the messy reality of the creative life.
