Summary

Business has adapted and evolved over the decades, and practices that were considered successful even just 10 years ago aren’t necessarily the best practices for now. David Heinemeier Hansson learned this while in business school, and he began the process of creating his own business practices from scratch. Hear his story, why he broke free from the norm, and how it led to the major success he’s had now.

David Heinemeier Hansson is the creator of Ruby on Railsfounder & CTO at Basecamp (formerly 37signals), best-selling author, Le Mans class-winning racing driver, public speaker, hobbyist photographer, and family man.

I think for whatever reasons I've always had a problem with authority.

I've always had a deep mistrust of anyone claiming to either know sort of the secret of something or even codified knowledge, which is something I ran into

0:18.0

plenty when I went to business school. Like, hey, here's how you run a successful business.

0:22.0

And I always kept thinking like, hey, here's how you run a successful business.

And I think perhaps that's some of it too,

0:42.8

that I just, a lot of what I was sort of taught

0:46.0

in business school and school in general,

0:48.4

I couldn't relate to it.

0:49.5

Like, it didn't feel like that applied to me.

0:55.7

And that came to a lot of the rules about how you're supposed to build a business and so forth. So I think the foundation of a lot of the work that we're doing is

1:01.6

basically just that deep-seated mistrust of one

1:05.1

from other people's experiences.

1:08.2

So we basically reverted to first principle.

1:11.9

I'm going to learn as much as I can from my own experiences

1:15.0

which I know on a sort of societal level is that's perhaps not that great and I mean if you

1:21.9

try to figure everything out from scratch are you going to come up with something that's as good as what other people have spent decades or millennium perfecting?

1:30.0

Well, in a lot of cases perhaps yes it is, because perhaps right now all those lessons from two

1:36.0

decades ago just don't apply right anymore.

1:40.1

And being taught them actually make you worse off than not knowing them at all.
