Summary

Pope Francis' 2021 decree, Traditionis custodes, which limited the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass, set off a heated and at times toxic debate between more traditionalist Catholics and those who want to see the reforms of the Second Vatican Council more fully implemented. Is there a way for us to talk about the liturgy without it turning into a war? On this "best of" episode, we're revisiting a conversation with Rev. Pierre Amar, a priest in the Diocese of Versailles in France. Father Amar grew up attending the Latin Mass and was ordained into the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, an order dedicated to the celebration of the pre-Vatican II Mass rite. But he also loves and celebrates the novus ordo or ordinary form, and does not think the two forms of the liturgy need to be in conflict. 0:59.9	Great to be here. So I know you have feelings about the Latin Mass. I do. I do. I was a Latin mass guy in college, something I have talked about on the show before and written about in the
1:03.6	Pages of America, have moved away from that being my preferred traditional style, I would say,
1:10.1	to say the least. But I at least understand those who
1:14.0	really appreciate it. Yeah. And I'm sure you've noticed that when you talk to certain people about
1:17.9	the Latin Mass, the conversation can quickly get heated. That's right. And that's not just from the
1:22.8	incense. That's from the tempers that flare up quite regularly. Exactly.
1:30.6	So a few years ago, we spoke with Father Pierre Amar.
1:42.7	He's a French priest who appreciates and celebrates in the Latin Mass about how we can have more civil conversations about the liturgy wars, which are still very much a current issue in the church. Yeah.
1:43.4	And we wanted to feature this episode again over the summer because with the election of Pope Leo,
1:48.3	we're starting to see people question whether or not Leo's going to continue with some of the reforms and restrictions
1:54.0	that Pope Francis put in place on the Latin Mass.
