This took place ten years ago.

My older sister, an art teacher, was renting a run-down two-bedroom apartment to use

as her studio.

She didn't live there, she just used it for her artwork.

I thought it was such a waste that she was paying for it, but not living there.

So I asked her to let me stay there instead.

My first day returning to the studio was so exciting.

She told me to lock up carefully, so when I got back, I made sure to set the door chain.

I read a book after dinner, and enjoyed my time alone.

It was late before I knew it, so I checked the door once more, checked to see the gas was closed, and then went to bed.

A short while later, around two or three in the morning, I heard the door open.

My sister must have come to paint something.

She's working really hard, I thought, drifting back to sleep as she went into the next room over.

That was the room with all her painting goods.

I heard her muttering and laughing.

Really is a thin line between artists and weirdos, I thought with a laugh, before falling

back asleep.

My sister was gone when I woke up again the next morning.

I got ready for the day, thinking about how passionate my sister was about her art.

As I went to remove the door chain, suddenly a chill ran down my spine.
