Summary

This episode originally ran March 26, 2019. This was a very popular episode and we're delighted to share it with you again.

When we see images on pinterest and instagram, it can be a wonderful inspiration for future projects, we get ideas but there's a dark side to the social media. Sometimes we begin to hate our houses because they don't measure up.

Here are our tips to be content with your home and to make everyday life in your home a joy.

keep your house tidy
keep the clutter at bay
keep it picked up
start some new habits to keep it clean
clutter causes stress - bring every room back to 'ready' make your bed
display some sentimental items or favorite collections around your home
Focus on things you can take with you, if you think you are moving, but there is no need to ignore your home if you are moving.
think about the positives about your home, rather than the negatives. what drew you to it in the first place?
fix the things that are broken
make sure you have a comfortable mattress and seating
add beauty to your every day life. So if that kitchen sponge looks so gross you don't want to touch it, toss it!  get a new sponge!
make sure you have some nice things to use for your daily routine
add a special area for relaxing, reading, a cup of tea or listening to music
use essential oils in your home
make your bedroom into a retreat
invite people over, entertain and have fun in your home
start a gratitude journal record a happy memory at the end of each day
don't have a temporary attitude about your home. Make it homey even if you don't plan to stay forever
don't compare your home with the ones you see on Pinterest and Instagram
replace an uncomfortable sofa or mattress

Hi, I'm Kelly Wilkins here with Anita Joyce, and this is Decorating Tips and Tricks.

0:13.3

Episode 318, How to Be Happier in Your Home. Everybody can be a little bit happier, even if you've got to spring

0:22.6

in your step. So today we're going to talk all about that, and you can find the show notes for today's

0:27.3

episode at Decorating Tips and Tricks.com slash 318.

0:32.7

You know, Kelly, I just think about Pinterest and Instagram and how it's such a fabulous source for

0:40.8

information for us, inspirational ideas. You get so many great ideas for doing things in your

0:48.5

house. But sometimes we look at these pictures and then we look at our houses and go, won't, won't.

0:56.1

I mean, I think there's really a dark side to all of this in that a lot of people end up being really unhappy with their homes.

1:04.1

And I think it's just really a sad thing for someone to kind of do this comparison thing and then just feel unhappy with what they have.

1:12.3

Right. So we're going to help you today shake that off. Everybody does it. You're not alone.

1:17.3

I mean, gosh, you know, no matter who you are, you're looking and saying, oh, I wish I had a wrap around porch or, you know, why does she get all that natural light? Or I wish I had more square footage,

1:31.2

you know, or other people that I wish I had less square footage. You know, it's the more trim around my

1:36.4

windows. Right. Less trim around my windows. You know, I have straight hair. I wish I had curly hair.

1:41.3

You know, there's that. And then there's the, oh, you know, I wish I had the

1:45.0

budget for that. But there are, you know, so much of life is attitude and perception anyway. And there's

1:54.2

definitely a way to take in all this great information and be inspired by it and use it as a kickstart to do things in your home

2:02.8

and make plans for the future and think about, well, if I don't have a wrap around porch

2:08.3

in this house, then I'm going to, in my next house, I'm going to have a wrap around porch

2:11.9

and turn it into positive rather than just ended up feeling, you know, weary and less than because you spent a

2:20.7

session on Instagram or Pinterest. Yeah. So I think there's a lot of little things we can do to improve

2:26.9

our experiences in our homes that will make us have a much better feeling about our homes where

2:33.3

we're just going to feel more content and happier.
