Summary

1001 interviews author and veteran Mark Hager regarding his new book 'The Last of the 357th Infantry Harold Frank's WWII Story of Faith & Courage- which is an incredible story of a WWII veteran who participated in the Normandy invasion as a BAR man, was wounded after 30 days on non-stop fighting during which most of his division was killed or wounded, and survived a German prison camp.. His survival is credited to the lessons he learned during the depression in North Carolina and his faith in God and family.

I've read a lot of World War II books for business and pleasure,

0:44.6

and the book we're taking a look at today is one of the best and most enjoyable World War II histories

0:49.2

I've ever had the good luck to come across.

0:51.8

It's called The Last of the 357th infantry, Harold Frank's

0:56.0

World War II story of faith and courage by Mark Hager. What differs this story from most is the way

1:02.6

he shares the story with the reader. We're able to join Harold Frank as he grows up poor during the

1:07.7

depression, learning the values, faith in God, and survival skills he would

1:12.2

need to survive the bloody shores of Normandy as a B.A.R. Gunner, as well as captivity in a German

1:17.1

prison camp. It's a compelling story, made all the better from hours of interviews with Harold Frank,

1:23.1

who truly was the last survivor of the war-torn 357th infantry.

1:32.3

This book will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout, and I highly recommend it.

1:35.1

Mark Hager, thank you for joining us today.

1:57.4

Well, thank you, John, for having me on, and it's just a sheer coincidence that I even got to meet, Harold, and even more stunning that I didn't know more about him, being that, you know, where I work and the museum operation that I have, I felt I should have known him for years.

1:59.9

And it was just an amazing feat.

2:02.7

He's an amazing man. And I think everyone that's reading this will feel the same way. If you don't mind, would you share a little bit of your background

2:08.6

and then tell us what inspired you to write Harold Frank's story? Well, let me see. I'm from North

2:15.4

Carolina, of course. I was actually a U.S. Army veteran.

2:19.1

I was a field artillery surveyor and went to Basic of Fort Seale, Oklahoma.

2:24.1

And then actually, my first duty station, I was sent to Germany in the mid-late 1980s before the wall came down.

2:33.9

So I got to see the effect of communism up front and close in front of me.
