Today we're talking to director and producer Margaret Brown.

The Clotilda was the last known ship to arrive in the United States

carrying enslaved Africans decades

after slave importation was outlawed. The ship was burned and sank somewhere

in the Mobile River while its passengers would later settle in the community of Africa Town.

In the century that followed, the descendants of the Clotilde struggled to preserve their heritage

and live life in an Alabama town encircled by industrial property owned by the

descendants of the slave owners.

As a renewed effort to find the missing wreck gets underway, the community grapples with the implications

of its discovery and what kind of justice it may or may not bring.

Oh, thank you for having me. So what made you so interested in this story as a

documentary topic? How did you get involved? I'm from Mobile, Alabama and I made a film 15 years ago called The Order of Myths.

And when I was making that film, my mother said to me,
