Summary

Benny Feilhaber is a very patient man. The former USMNT midfielder answered all Daryl's questions about his international career, his first call-up, that Gold Cup final goal, Bob Bradley's tactical instructions, the lack of consideration from Jurgen Klinsmann, and the final few minutes of 2018 World Cup qualification.

Benny also talks about BSI: The Podcast, the show he runs with Sal Zizzo and Ike Opara. We 100% recommend that you listen, because there is no other soccer podcast where players talk as openly as they do on BSI.

Hello and welcome to the Total Soccer show.

My name is Daryl Grove and I'm joined by one third of the BSI podcast. His name is Benny Falhabber. Hello, Benny. How's it going, Darrell? Thanks for having me on, man. We're big fans of the show and we've been trying to emulate you guys for a while now. So it's fun to be on here. It's an honor to have you on. It's an honor any time we have a U.S. men's national team player on the show.

1:48.0

Former. Former. Former. Well, you never know. Callups might be coming in the future.

1:53.4

It's also, honestly, we're big fans of your show. Really, really like the BSI, the podcast.

1:59.8

The way I would describe it is players comfortably talking

2:04.0

to each other. Is that fair? Yeah, that is fair. And I would even argue that since your retirement,

2:10.4

you've got even more comfortable talking. Maybe a little bit looser about what you feel you can talk

2:15.7

about. But also, maybe you've had more time to sort of think about how to structure the show and all that. Right. I think it's a little bit of both. Experience for sure plays a part. I mean, we should actually have a training session between me, Iig, and Sal, to go back and listen to the very first podcast and be and criticize ourselves because that would be a good learning experience in terms of, you know, where we've come from and what we're doing now. So I think we've improved a lot on that end. And then in terms of, you know, retirement, there's kind of a fine line because, yes, you're not playing in the game. So you kind of can, you know, allow yourself to have some, some bigger, you know, more specific perspectives. But at the same time, i might be working in this league at one time so you you got to be smart about the things that you say as well to some extent uh whereas when you're a player you know where you're at you know the things that you can and you can't say so it it's uh it's a fine line but i'm to it. Well, I'll give you an example.

3:06.9

Actually, there's a little bit of Mark Maron, I think, about your show. I love Mark. You love Mark. I love Mark. I watched the show. I don't listen too much of his podcast, but I watch a show. Okay. So the podcast, especially in the early days, was a lot of Mark Maron would have a comedian on and they talk about comedy and he'd do a great interview right he'd get great things out of his guests but it would also they'd end up talking about

3:28.4

Mark Maron's career and maybe things that he wished had gone differently or decisions he wished other

3:35.2

people had made and I was just listening to your interview with Moedou from April,

3:45.2

and you were talking about the 2008 Olympic roster and Peter Novak.

3:47.9

And that just reminded me of Mark Maron, right?

3:53.0

Because you had like a little tangent about like maybe what you thought the makeup of the roster should have been.
