Today is Part 3 in our series on the Belgium Expedition.

Our story is going to take place off the Antarctic Peninsula, also known as Grandland,

directly south of Cape Horn, as well as in the Bellinghausen Sea.

I realized in our previous episodes, I didn't clarify the titles of the Expedition's leaders,

and it may have led to some confusion.

The leader of the Expedition was Adrian Daycare Lash, he is often referred to as the commander or commandant.

The captain of the ship was George La Quante, but make no mistake, Daycare Lash was the boss in all ways.

La Quante is a fine officer, but it is Daycare Lash who makes all the major decisions and takes over when things get rough.

Our story last time left off with the Belgium Reaching Antarctica on January 23rd, 1898.

Reaching the continent along the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula was a huge achievement.

The Expedition had nearly come to an end when Belgium had been stuck on some rocks in the channels of Tierra del Fuego.

But the sturdy whaler had gotten off the rocks without major damage and continued her mission.

For Adrian Daycare Lash, reaching the continent was a dream come true.
