Summary

This week, Mal sits down with professional golfer Tisha Alyn to talk about the double life she lived while competing on the LPGA tour - hiding her sexuality from the sport she loved, her peers, and even her family. Tish opens up about coming out, the challenges of having a mom who wasn’t accepting at first, and how that strained relationship shaped her journey. Thank you for being here. I'm happy to be here. I'm so excited to have you here. It's kind of funny. Like, I feel like we followed each other online for a long time. We're both like in the queer world. Yes. But we didn't meet until we went to Disney World on a brand trip. Yes. Right. Right. Which is wild. Which is wild. Because you were the plus one. And I'm like, wait, what? Yeah, but when I first saw you, I was like, what? Yeah, that is the first time that we met. That's so crazy. Yes. Yes. Yeah. So it's good to have you on the couch, finally. Happy to be here. And I want to talk, you mentioned that you don't get a lot of like airtime, I guess, to talk about queerness. Yeah. That's very true. Being in golf. Yes. Well, golf is a very male dominated sport. And it's like when we speak in golf, it's very like to the youth and to growing women's golf and to, you know, the professional level and like broadcast level.

And so like there isn't a lot of room for queerness in golf at the moment, but it is becoming,

2:07.5

which is great.

2:08.5

Like if you asked me like when I came out publicly like in 2019, how that was, that was scary.

2:13.1

But now I feel like it's a lot more accepting, but it's still kind of like, okay, just continue as is. Right. It's as usual. And so like, not that there's a lot of room for me to just be like, y'all, I'm gay and I'm loud and I'm proud. You know, there's not a lot of moments like that. But there could definitely be more openness and embrace so that we can continue

2:35.9

to make it more like an inclusive space. So no, I don't get to talk about it much. Okay. I want to get

2:40.3

into all of it. Yes. But I want to start with who are you? Like what was your childhood like?

2:45.3

Yeah. Tell me about your family. For sure. Oh, love. So I'm Filipino and very true to my culture. My parents both migrated here from the Philippines and I'm from Chicago. Oh my God, me too. Really? I'm from Naperville. No way. Wait, weird. I didn't know that. Yeah, I was born in Rockford and then raised actually like in Chicago. Okay. Love. Yeah. And then soon thereafter, when I turned three, I golf came into my life already.

3:08.9

It was just like away from my dad and I to bond. He was a stay-at-home dad. And my mom was, she actually came to the U.S. because she was a sponsored nurse. Wow. Yeah. So medical field, my whole family. And then eventually that was just how my dad and I bonded. He'd go to the range all the time, take me, and I would just be with them.
