Hello and welcome to Behind the News, my name is Doug Hanwood.

Two segments today we'll talk with David Adler,

the progressive international about the IMF,

and with the journalist Sudeep Batacharya about Asian Americans.

The International Monetary Fund was founded,

along with the World Bank, in 1945 to govern the post-war

international economic order.

Collectively known as the Bretton Woods Institution's

named after the New Hampshire Town

that was a site of their founding conference,

their division of labor was fairly simple.

The fund would offer assistance to countries

facing short-term problems in meeting

the international obligations,

and the bank would provide long-term finance.

First, European countries are rebuilding after the war,

and then to poorer countries as they were decolonized.

All this, of course, would occur under the watchful imperial eye
