In the middle of July, riots erupted in South Africa shortly after former President Jacob Zuma was jailed for refusing to testify

in a vast and solid corruption case against him.

Why? What happened to the African National Congress, the ANC, which ran an admirable campaign of liberation for decades during the apartheid era,

but has governed less admirably over the last 27 years.

Sean Jacobs, professor of international affairs, the new school, founded the website Africa is a country about a decade ago.

It's grown into an important forum for African writers to discuss politics and culture on that continent.
