Hello and welcome to Behind the News my name is Doug Henwood the usual serving of two guests today in a minute Ryan Grimm will tell us about the state of the

Republican Party and at the bottom of the hour Party. And at the bottom of the hour, Rachel Sherman

reports in her study the thoughts and feelings

of the rather rich.

First, DC.

The Republican Party looks chaotic

and took a drubbing in Tuesday's elections, yet at the same time they control

all three branches of the federal government. Most saliently at the moment they're trying to pass a tax

bill, partly so that they can say they pass something, and partly so they can shower business in the very

rich with billions and cuts.

Among other things, they're proposing to eliminate or reduce the mortgage interest deduction,

deductions for state and local taxes, important in high-tech states like New York and

California, and even eliminate the tax exemption on graduate school fellowships.

Can they do it?

And what is the overall state of the Republican Party anyway?

Here's Ryan Grimm, Washington correspondent for the Intercept, to tell us.

By the way, after we recorded this the other day, Senate Republicans came up with their own tax bill that would completely eliminate in contrast

with the House bill which would only partly eliminate the state and local
