when people are blowing things up to celebrate the glory that is the USA,

Behind the News sticks to the two-guessed standard.

Robert Papal explained how, despite months of death and destruction, Israel has barely

made a dent in Hamas's strength, and Wanda Bertram of the Prison Policy Initiative will review the state of crime and punishment.

Israel has dropped something like 70,000 tons of bombs on Gaza, a massive amount in a small densely populated state,

and killed almost 40,000 Palestinians by the official count and

almost certainly more.

The stated goal of all his bloodletting is destroying Hamas, but there's little evidence

that they've even begun to accomplish that task.

While some military and political figures in Israel have conceded that that goal is impossible

to achieve, on Monday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed we are progressing to the end of the phase of

eliminating Hamas's military, one of his many and frequent lies.

Herewith more is Robert Pape, Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, and Director of its Project

and Security and Threats.

From 1991 to 1994, he taught at the U.S. Air Force's School of Advanced Air Power Studies.

Pape is the author of a recent article in Foreign Affairs, the High

Establishment Journal of the High Establishment Council on Foreign Relations, with the blunt but

accurate title, Hamas is winning. Every time I have somebody like this on this show, I get strenuous complaints that they

didn't sing from the left-wing songbook.

Yes, I know this, but I think it could be very useful to hear from well-informed

and thoughtful mainstream figures.
