unusual thematic unity to the show. In moments we'll hear the economic

historian Adam II is talking about globalization, American imperial power, and Donald Trump.

And then at the bottom of the hour, the political scientist Leo Penich, who frequent guests in this show,

will talk about many of the same topics. Before getting to the substance, I want to apologize for some of the audio quality

on this show.

Summer means vacations and less than ideal setups for both host and guests.

I've been writing and talking about globalization for something like 25 years.

I've been skeptical of many of the master narratives around it, both the neoliberal

triumphalist version and the leftist critique that held it to be the principal source of evil

of the modern world.

All along I've thought that globalization narratives

overlooked centuries of historical continuity

and not just capitalism, but a deep human need to move about.

But now this sort of globalization

in the 90s made famous looks to be under severe attack by nationalists across the globe.

What does it all mean?

First to address these issues is Adam Toes.

Toes is an economic historian at Columbia.
