The Hello and behind the news. My name is Doug Henwood, a radical overturning of norms today,

though I suppose that's appropriate to the material. No interviews, but instead excerpts from an event

sponsored by the New York City chapter of DSA's Academy for Socialist Education, a project I work on.

The Academy, as we say in our webpage, offers accessible courses taught by distinguished scholars,

thinkers, and organizers

on the history and theory of socialist struggles and an analysis of the long-standing

structures of capitalist society. The Academy aims to supplement ongoing New York City

DSA education with more rigorous offerings taught by academics and scholars in the field.

The event, held at the Church of the Village of Manhattan on April 28th,

was called Imperialism and the Homeland, the rise of militarism from Caracas to

Minneapolis to Tehran. It features the historians Greg Grandin and Nikol Paul Singh,

with the Academy's own Gaya Shresconthon moderating. Greg is a professor at Yale. His books

include Fordlandia, the Empire of Necessity,

and most recently America America, a history of our hemisphere. Nihil teaches at NYU and

writes about black radicalism and U.S. foreign policy. He's the director of NYU's prison

education program, and Gaia is a climate activist and a graduate student in economics at John

J. College. It's hard to sort out

the deranging complexities of the Trump regime. On the one hand, it seems very American. Trump himself

is a nativist and a huckster in the classic American vein. The old Americanism Ballyhoo was

almost made for him. But on the other hand, it all does look like a turn for the worse, more cynical,

more repressive, more in love with violence than what went before. How to think about all this?
