in Davos, an obituary for the post-World War II U.S. dominated global order. To call David Harvey

a geographer, which he is formally, would be too narrow a description. He's been one of the leading

thinkers in the Marxist tradition for over 40 years. He didn't start out that way. He began his career

in the 1960s as a fairly conventional quantitative geographer, but soon developed an interest in social

justice in the problems of capitalism. By the early 1970s, he is one of the leading figures in the

field to adopt a Marxist approach, first applying it to urban affairs and then more broadly into

the spatial aspects of capital's social relations from the city to the globe.

His 1982 book, The Limits to Capital, was a major document of his intellectual turn, and

many more books followed. After stints at Oxford and Johns Hopkins, he landed at the City

University of New York, where he's been for the

last 25 years. Harvey's new book, The Story of Capital from Verso, is if Wikipedia's list is to be

believed, his 29th. It's an ambitious attempt at an overview of political economy today through

a Marxist lens. It won't be out for a few more weeks, but these days, publishing is all about

the pre-orders,
