You never get a second chance at a first impression.

It sets the tone for any relationship.

For me, trust is built within the first few minutes of meeting someone. I remember my

first interaction with the Belmont County Sheriff's Department. From the second I mentioned J.C. McGee's

murder, things felt suspiciously tense. I naively assumed that the police would be happy someone was investigating a 20-year-old cold case.

One thing less for them to worry about, and maybe it gets solved and bring some positive attention to the county and the police department.

But I didn't get the feeling that these detectives were happy about my curiosity.

There was something I couldn't pick up on when I first spoke with the police.

But that feeling raised some red flags.

And where there's smoke, there's usually fire. On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer,

and the entire country erupted in calls for police reform and racial justice. It was Memorial Day. A few hours
