Summary

The two most successful clubs in English football go head to head at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon with plenty more than just pride at stake. An 18th consecutive victory for Liverpool would equal Manchester City’s Premier League record and, more importantly, re-establish their eight-point lead at the top. Victory for Jurgen Klopp’s relentless side at the home of their biggest rivals would also underline the huge gap in quality that now exists between the clubs. Just two seasons ago Manchester United finished six points ahead of Liverpool in second. But since then the clubs have gone in completely different directions and United will go into the match a massive 15 points behind Liverpool and with the pressure growing on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. So to find out how and why the Red Devils have suffered such a huge fall in grace, Paul Wheelock speaks to Samuel Luckhurst, the chief Manchester United writer for the Manchester Evening News.
