I'm Claire Bolderson and I've made three reports for the BBC World Service from three different countries,

Peru, Indonesia and this one from Kenya.

In these reports I speak to three types of people or to be more exact three types of women.

First there are inspiring individuals.

Second, small women's organizations.

And thirdly those involved in mass movements to make a change countrywide.

The issue that unites them is domestic violence.

It's not that these countries alone suffer the problem of domestic violence,

but in all of them I found different solutions aimed at combating it.

The World Health Organization estimates that one in three women worldwide suffer physical or sexual violence by a partner.

The numbers are even higher than that in Kenya, where these women in a village called Unity have adopted a rather

radical response to the abuse they've suffered. They've set up a village without

men. This is how the women of Unity Village in Northern Kenya greet visitors.
