On a maximum security psychiatric ward, as a staff member, you live under constant stress. Your antennas always up. You have to be ready to fly into action at the sound of a problem, like a thump or a shout or the drumming of running foot.

When you're treating violent patients, you have to be hyper attuned. You have to always be watchful, because the moods of the patients can escalate day by day, sometimes hour by hour. And you're always waiting for that inevitable explosion to come. And it will come.

I did a stretch like that for five years once, and I don't mean I worked five years solid without a break. I mean, without transferring off the unit and doing some other kind of nursing like pediatric or medical surgical.

A lot of hospitals nowadays, they require that of psychiatric personnel to rotate off the unit maybe for a year or so, for the sake of their own sanity.

There's no way in the world I would have been okay with that back then, because psychiatric nursing was what I believe I was born to do.

So, why did you become a psychiatric nurse in the first place?
