Summary

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Nicene Creed articulates the mystery of the Trinity with the wonderful phrase "begotten not made," meaning that the Son is not a creature but rather shares in the selfsame nature as the Father. The Holy Spirit is then the life-giving love breathed out between the Father and the Son.

0:50.6

today, I'm going to put on my Theologians hat a little bit. If a Theologian can't

0:55.2

speak on Trinity Sunday, when can he speak? Some years ago at the parish

1:01.1

where I was helping out in New Chicago, a man approached me after Mass. He said,

1:06.1

you know, Father, when we recite the creed and we say all those things about

1:10.4

Christ being begotten not made and one being with the Father, does that really

1:16.0

mean anything? I remember I was like barely able to suppress a smile because

1:21.7

he was a person of very good will and a very bright guy, but obviously had never

1:25.5

really been taught why those words are important because in fact, not only do

1:31.4

they mean something, they mean pretty much everything. In point of fact, at a

1:37.6

decisive moment in the history of the church, men fought like cats and dogs over

1:43.2

those words. In fact, in Emperor's power hinged on the acceptance of those words.

1:52.7

Theologians realized that the faith would rise or fall over those words.
