Summary

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!

Long before Salem became shorthand for hysteria, fire, and fear, the idea of the witch had already crossed the ocean.

In this episode, we dig into the dark origins of American witchcraft with historian and author Troy Taylor, whose new book One Night in Salem: The Hidden History of the American Witch peels back the layers of how fear arrived in the New World alongside the first European settlers. They didn’t just bring religion and tradition with them—they carried the trauma of a Europe gripped by witch hunts, torture, and public executions. That fear didn’t disappear when they reached America. It took root.

What followed in Salem Village wasn’t just superstition, but a perfect storm of paranoia, religious extremism, and social fracture—one that led to the deaths of innocent people and forever stained American history. But Salem wasn’t the end of the story.

We explore how witchcraft accusations evolved after Salem, how the image of the American witch shifted over time, and why the fear never truly went away. From colonial gallows to modern belief systems, this is the hidden history that still echoes today. This is Part Two of our conversation.

They had fled at a time when thousands were being accused, tortured, hanged, and burned

for being witches.

0:34.1

They arrived in America looking for a fresh start and brought that fear of witches with

them. That fear and dread became hysteria when evil came to Salem Village, fueling hostility,

distrust, and religious fanaticism that claimed the lives of innocent people on the gallows.

But Salem was not the end of America's obsession with witchcraft.

I'm Carol Hughes, and on this episode of The Grave Talks, we continue our conversation about

the hidden history of the American Witch with author Troy Taylor.

1:12.4

When we think of witches, I think so often people associate witches with devil worshiping.

1:19.3

This entire conversation that we've had up to this point, there's nothing that has anything

1:26.0

to do with devil worshiping. No. Not even the folk magic that is meant to do with devil worshipping.

1:27.7

No, not even the folk magic that is meant to be harmful.

1:31.2

Even that doesn't have anything to do with the devil.

1:33.6

You know, I mean, it just doesn't.

1:35.7

That's an old, that's an old school belief that rooted in Europe and was brought here by

1:41.7

the Puritans, you know, they believed that the witches were in,

1:44.8

you know, some kind of league with the devil. They had to sign the devil's book. They had to

1:48.5

make a deal with the devil. But that all kind of faded away. And we still, but not completely,

1:54.8

of course, because find a person who's even just semi-religious. Let's say they go to church on Sundays, but they're not devout or fanatic or anything.

2:04.6

And if you bring up witchcraft, they immediately think it has something to do with the devil because that's what organized religion has painted witchcraft with when it doesn't.
