Summary

In this episode of The Dept. Omar breaks down what it really takes to become the go-to expert in your industry even if you don’t feel like the most talented or experienced person in the room. Drawing from his journey of building millions of views and a loyal audience online, he explains why visibility often matters more than raw ability, and how anyone can step into thought leadership by approaching their work with the right mindset and strategy. Omar shares a powerful three-part framework for building influence and becoming known for what you do: adopting a student’s identity, carrying the responsibility of a leader, and mastering deliverability the ability to communicate ideas clearly so people can actually apply them. If you’ve ever felt overlooked in your industry, struggled to get traction with your content, or wondered how some people become the “voice” of their field, this episode will challenge you to rethink what it means to be an expert and show you how to turn your knowledge into influence, authority, and opportunity online.

Would you call yourself an expert or maybe consider yourself really good at what it is you do?

0:05.3

But maybe you're frustrated at the fact that you're not the go-to expert or you're not known for what it is you do.

0:12.8

But the reality is, is you don't have to be an expert to be the go-to expert anymore.

Visibility beats ability.

0:20.5

And so I'm going to be breaking down some secrets that I have

0:22.8

found in amassing over 3 million subscribers on YouTube, over 75 million views with long form content,

0:28.7

and really becoming one of the go-to experts in my industry. Hey, what's up? It's Omar Al-Decori,

0:34.9

and this is the department. I'm so excited to get into this, and I really wanted to jump right into defining what a thought leader is because that's really what we're going to be talking about today. We're going to be talking about how do you become a thought leader? And even my way of saying this would be how do you become someone who people care about what it is you have to say. Like, think about that.

You've been doing what you've been doing for so long.

People in your world maybe know that you're great at what you do, whether you're a service

provider, a coach, a consultant, an author, or a speaker.

1:07.1

But when you make content, it really just doesn't stick.

1:09.8

And I've been asked a handful of times,

1:12.6

like Omar, how have you built a cult-like following? How have you built an audience that is just

1:19.1

so on your team? And the reality is, is it's really come down to these three things that I'm

1:25.0

going to share with you. But I want to read off a definition

1:28.2

of what a thought leader is. Thought leaders are the informed opinion leaders and the go-to people

1:35.5

in their field of expertise. They become the trusted sources who move and inspire people with

1:42.1

innovative ideas, who turn ideas into reality, and know and show

1:47.5

how to replicate their success or successes. This is a powerful definition because it still means

1:54.7

that the riches are in the niches. It still means that industries need leaders and go-to leaders.

2:02.7

And if you're frustrated at seeing other people kind of rise up in the ranks because maybe they just do content better than you,
