The new man must bear the burden of the shadow consciously.

For such a man knows that whatever is wrong in the world is in himself.

And if he only learns to deal with his own shadow, he has done something real for the world.

He has succeeded in shouldering at least an infinitesimal part of the gigantic, unsolved social

problems of our day.

These problems are mostly so difficult because they are poisoned by mutual projections.

How can anyone see straight when he does not even see himself and the darkness he

unconsciously carries with him into all of his dealings? So that's a quote from Carl Jung in

1937 when he gave a lecture at Yale.

And I wanted to share that quote with you because I feel like it is what we are all

being called to do, what we are all being asked to do as men, the new man as he talked about, the new man of our world, of our culture,

of our society today must bear the burden of the shadow, must become aware of his own

darkness, his own demons.

And in order to do that, one of the hardest things that I've come across yet is the act of keeping your heart open as a man.

Your challenge, your ability to stay open as a man to keep your heart open as a man is no small

task. It's no easy undertaking for the modern man who is inundated more than ever before to close down,

encouraged to callous the outer shell of his heart in an effort to seal off the soft underbelly and

doorway to his soul.

In a world where you can go online and see the dismembered bodies of men fighting in wars

that they don't really fully understand or watch as family members verbally attack one another

over health choices and political beliefs, the courage that it takes for you as a man

in the moment to keep your heart open. It's measured by your willingness, by your capacity to remain in the seat of the heart,
