I grew up in the Scottish Highlands on the west coast near the Isle of Sky and that has such a stunning scenery

and landscape so I've always felt very connected to nature and the environment and very passionate

about protecting it.

So when her mother told her about the Bewley Priory witch Elm

after reading an article about it,

Isabel was surprised it never came up in her studies.

I was actually doing my master's in art and

social practice and that's all about community projects. It was during that time that I

first heard about the witch elm and I didn't know it was there before. The Buele Priory

witch-elm, scientifically known as Olmuth Glabra, was thought to be one of the

oldest trees in all of Europe, and its distinctive look captivated anyone who laid eyes on it.

It was such a striking tree if you ever got to see it.

It was really gnarly and gothic and just sort of loomed at the gates.

But despite how strong and sturdy the tree seemed on the outside,

on the inside, it was suffering from a disease that's been decimating elm trees across the country.
