0:15.0 | We're going to look at the beloved hymn, Be Thou My Vision, and see if we can figure |
0:20.0 | out when and where the lyrics for this hymn come from. |
0:26.0 | If we go to the third stanza, we see lots of clues. |
0:29.0 | First, we see the expression, battle shield, and then we see the expression, high tower. |
0:34.0 | Well, that all sounds rather medieval to me, and then we see the word dignity. |
0:39.0 | Now, in our moment, dignity means the worth and value of every human being. |
0:44.0 | Every person is created in the image of God, and therefore every person has dignity. |
0:49.0 | But back in the ancient and medieval world, dignity iscribed status, or even nobility to a person. |
0:56.0 | Much akin to our word, dignitary. |
1:00.0 | So we put some of those clues together and we begin to see the when. |
1:04.0 | But what about the where? Well, that clue comes in the fourth stanza, |
1:10.0 | and in a phrase that is repeated at the beginning of the fifth stanza, |
1:14.0 | and it's this phrase, the high king of heaven. |
1:18.0 | Now, if you were to search Scripture, you would find the expression king of heaven, |
1:22.0 | and Daniel 437. |
1:24.0 | Nebuchadnezzar, after his humiliation, praises and honors the king of heaven. |
1:31.0 | But not this expression, high king of heaven. |
1:35.0 | It is certainly in concert with the biblical teaching of God, |
1:39.0 | but we don't find this exact expression in the Bible. |
1:42.0 | So where does high king come from? |
